Steve Menzies is one of the greatest players ever to play the game of Rugby League. He joined Manly Sea Eagles in 1993 and has gone on to become the highest try scoring forward in the history of the game. He is second highest points scorer in the history of the NRL and also shares the record with Terry Lamb for the most appearances.
He played well over 350 games for Manly as well as earning 15 Test caps for Australia and he made 20 appearances for New South Wales in the State of Origin Series. He is equally at home in the backs, half backs or forwards and his first season at the Bulls was an unqualified success that saw him miss only one game - that at Bridgend against Celtic Crusaders when he became the first Rugby League player to contract Swine Flu - and he was second in the Bulls Try scoring charts.
Steve "Beaver" Menzies was born on 4th December 1973 in Manly, New South Wales.
He is the most prolific try scoring forward in the history of the Australian Rugby League: His total of 180 tries is second in Australian first grade Rugby League, behind former North Sydney Bears and Manly winger Ken Irvine, who scored 212 tries
Steve played his junior rugby with the Harbord Devils, a junior club within the Manly-Warringah area and while attending Narrabeen High School, he played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 1992. Working his way through the junior grades, he quickly earned a contract with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and started his professional Rugby League career towards the end of the 1993 season when he made his debut against the Brisbane Broncos.
In the 1994 season he scored 16 tries, earning him the Dally M Rookie of the Year and Second Rower of the Year awards and he was then selected in the Australian Squad for the 1994 Kangaroo Tour. In 1995 Menzies became the first forward in fifty years to top the season's try-scoring list (22 tries) and in the same year made his State Of Origin debut for New South Wales. He again won the Dally M Second Rower of the Year award, and further representative honours in the 1995 World Cup squad. During the tournament he appeared in four games and scored six tries, which consisted of 'doubles' in all matches except the Final.
In 2004 Steve Menzies surpassed Rugby League stalwart Frank Burge's record of 'Most Tries Scored by a Forward' when he scored his 147th try against St George Illawarra. Before joing the Bulls at the end of last year he had scored a total of 180 tries in 349 games.
He played in the losing Grand Final in 2007 in which was the sole surviving member of the club's previous Grand Final appearance back in 1997. It was his fourth Grand Final but the Melbourne Storm proved too good on the day and Steve was left disappointed. In 2008 Manly were back in the Grand Final again and again it was against the Melbourne Storm. Unlike 2007, Manly were the overwhelmingly dominant side, decimating the defending premiers 40-0 - a Grand Final record. This triumphant victory penned a fairytale ending to Beaver's distinguished career. By playing in the 2008 grand final, Menzies equalled Terry Lamb's record of 349 first-grade games and he was one of eight Manly try-scorers on the day. It was fitting way to bring the curtain down on his illustrious Australian career.
