BULLS WOMEN BATTLE IN DEFEAT AGAINST TITLE HOPEFULS

DESPITE a stirring second-half display which saw the home side register three scores, Bradford Bulls Women fell to a 34-18 defeat against title chasing St Helens at Odsal Stadium yesterday.

The visitors, looking to keep up the pressure on league leaders Castleford Tigers, raced out of the blocks and scored after just two minutes.

Bradford had their chances but it would be St. Helens who were the happier at the halfway stage following a further five unanswered tries.

Soon after the restart, the home side got themselves on the scoreboard through the prolific Amy Hardcastle’s close range effort.

Bradford continued to press and Sarah Dunn further reduced the arrears before the visitors stemmed the tide – with a late Olivia Wood try proving only a consolation.

St Helens, who had only lost one league game going into the clash, were quick to trouble the scoreboard with Emily Rudge breaking from deep and touching down.

Becca Rotherham then scored from a set-play at the base of a scrum just minutes later before Channy Crowl’s powerful effort from close range.

Rudge then got her second on the back of a looping, cut out pass by Faye Gaskin – before Gaskin turned provider to scorer from a ‘show and go’ 10 metres out.

Tara Jones then added the final score of the half before Bradford’s fightback early in the second period.

Grace Ramsden fed Hardcastle inches from the Saints line, with three visiting defenders unable to stop her scoring her 18th try of the 2019 campaign.

The home side continued to probe the opposition defence looking for a way to get back into the contest and they did so on the hour mark.

Hardcastle once again involved, her flat pass collected by the on-rushing Sarah Dunn who broke the defence to race clear from 40 metres.

St Helens then scored their only try of the half before Olivia Wood barged her way over for a deserved score.
