KEAR OVERJOYED WITH DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE IN FIRST OUTING

As the Bulls opened the curtains looking to the 2018 season, so did newly appointed John Kear as he capped off his first game with a resounding 22-6 victory over Halifax RLFC.

Kear, sponsored by Bradford Bulls Banter, has made it clear since taking the helm at the club that defence will be of high order.

“I was really pleased. Because of the weather and my short tenure so far, we’ve only had four field sessions and I think for them to show that understanding with each other and that commitment, I was very pleased,” said Kear after picking up the victory in his first outing.

“We spoke about wanting to be a team that is difficult to score against and enjoys defending. We slipped up early on after we gave a penalty away and they scored on the next set but we went on to keep a clean sheet.

“I thought that they defended very well on the back of looking after the ball and in some tricky conditions.”

Following a majorly impressive recruitment drive during the offseason, Bradford boast an extremely formidable team, giving clear intention that the push for promotion is of top priority for the year ahead.

“I thought that the commitment to each other was marvellous and there is lots to build upon, it wasn’t the prettiest game but I don’t think that you would have got it in conditions like that. The Halifax team they sent was very committed, so a very pleasing day at the office.

“Part of the process is to try and create unified team and that is something that I feel that we can do.”

After conceding a penalty in the third minute to allow Halifax to cross the line for their only try of the game, Kears’ side maintained a clean sheet throughout due to an extremely pleasing defensive performance.

“If you are attempting to dominate possession you have to dominate the penalty count as well and I thought that they were pretty clean in all aspects of the game.

“I sat upstairs with the assistant head coach Leigh Beattie and I said that these boys are very well disciplined in defence. Structurally Halifax are very strong and the team held up very well against them and matched them physically.”

Kears’ second game in charge will come in the new year, as the Bulls host Sheffield Eagles at the Provident Stadium on the 14th February, and the former England coach is keen to see his side return to the field.

“It makes you get itchy feet to get back out there in amongst them and help them improve further both as individuals and as a team.

“I think it’s common knowledge that this is a city that wants to see a rugby league team flourish and obviously we will try to deliver that.”
