INTERVIEW WITH ALEXA VARNHAM

We sat down for an chat with Alexa Varnham - a new face in our Women's team in 2024 - regarding her life on and off the field! Credit: Cayden Sands.

As Bulls Women prepare the start of their league season, a variety of circumstances have meant that the team has had to practically begin from scratch, with an abundance of new players joining the club.

One of these new faces is Alexa Varnham, a young and ambitious player with a determination to make a good impression from the start.

Speaking about joining the Bulls and what it means to wear such a historic badge, she said: "It's absolutely massive! "I've only played for local teams up until now and it does feel a lot more professional and a lot more put together, and it's a really great experience and opportunity and I'm just really excited to be here."

Changes such as those that Bulls Women have experienced will of course create a unique experience for those joining, with the early friendlies and Challenge Cup matches giving them the time they need to do just that.

On her experience and expectations so far, Varnham said: "I'm really positive for the season. The Challenge Cup felt like more of an aspiration that we were gonna do well in, but as a team with lots of new players we showed that we can really gel quickly and I think that's gonna be good for the rest of the season!"

The Challenge Cup remains on the team's minds this weekend as they face a long trip south for their final game in the competition against London Broncos, a test that Varnham is relishing, whilst changing one of her personal habits and not being phased by the distance.

On her preparation for the game, she said: "I've been eating less chocolate than normal if I'm very honest! "I've not been doing anything special and I treat every game the same. It's always important to win and I don't think that just because it's the Challenge Cup we should put any more or any less effort in than any league game."

The game also holds a special meaning for Varnham, whose family roots in the area mean that she will have plenty of support for the occasion.

On the fixture's special nature, she said: "For me my family's gonna be down there because that's where I'm from, so that's going to be nice for a bit of home support!"

Following this game, Bulls Women will be able to turn their attention to the league,  with a trip to Salford Red Devils on April 14th, with Varnham being excited for both the game and the league campaign.

Speaking about her expectations for the league season, she said: "I'm feeling great about it! "This is the first professional club I've played for so I'm just here to make myself look good and play for the team and the badge."

"Hopefully results come from that but if not I know that I've put 100% in" she continued.

Alexa also presented us with an interesting fact about herself, detailing what she does in her spare time, as well as some impressive sporting pedigree.

On this, she said: "I work as an archaeologist, and also I'm a national silver medalist in Taekwondo!"
