KURT Haggerty is raring to go for Saturday’s physical battle versus Whitehaven.

The Ireland international made his Bradford Bulls debut in the opening game of 2016 as the Bulls beat Featherstone Rovers 22-12.

Haggerty played against Whitehaven in 2013, when the former Widnes Vikings man had a spell at Barrow Raiders, and is ready for the physical challenge.

“I’m looking forward to the Whitehaven game. It’s going to be another tough fixture, even more so because it’s at their ground,” said Haggerty, who is sponsored by Alexis Ridler.

“I know quite a few of the Whitehaven lads and they’re quite a physical bunch.

“They’re a physical side, who will try and come through the middle of us. We’ve got to be smart and we’ve got to be ready to bulk up in front them.

“The biggest and most important thing to take into the game is the win against Featherstone. It was brilliant to get our first win under our belt and with the other results in the league it felt even better.

“We only conceded two tries, so there are aspects of our game to work on but there are a lot of positives we can take into Saturday’s clash.

“Hopefully, the pitch won’t be too bad with the wet weather expected and if we’re a bit smarter in a few areas I’m sure we’ll be fine and come out on top.

“We’ve got to keep the momentum going now. We’ve got to keep picking up the wins, which will set us up nicely for the end of the year, but we can’t underestimate any team in this league.”

INFORMATION for Saturday’s game as the Bulls travel to Whitehaven.

Whitehaven narrowly won their sole pre-season friendly against Cumbrian arch-rivals Workington Town 12-6 in a match dominated by the weather.

However, Haven were brought back down to earth in their opening match of the 2016 Kingstone Press Championship as Halifax thumped them 52-6 at the Mbi Shay Stadium.

Recent Meetings

Last season, the Bulls managed comprehensive victories in both 2015 meetings with Whitehaven.

They met in this corresponding fixture last season at the Provident Stadium, where the Bulls won 34-4, led by a hat-trick of tries from Lee Gaskell.

Bradford then completed the double in May with a 32-16 victory at the Recreation Ground.

Gaskell ended up scoring once more, though a brace of tries each to Adrian Purtell and Danny Williams were the highlight of the win.

BRADFORD Bulls prop Johnny Walker will return to Whitehaven on Saturday, after featuring for the Cumbrian club on loan last season.

The Scotland international played five times during his time at Whitehaven and is looking forward to his return in a Bulls shirt.

Head Coach James Lowes handed Walker his competitive debut last Sunday in the 22-12 win over Featherstone Rovers.

The 24-year-old has fond memories of his Whitehaven stint and is relishing a successful trip to the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

“I’m really looking forward to playing against Whitehaven this weekend,” said Walker, who is sponsored by Double D Renovations.

“I had a fun time at the Recreation Ground when I was there on loan last season, so I can’t wait to get back out on the pitch and play against them, especially in a Bulls shirt.

“It would be great to get another win as we build momentum from last Sunday. There are things we can improve on from the Featherstone game, so it would be great to get another good performance and another win.

“We need to make sure we keep dominating the game, because we dropped our tempo against Featherstone. We need to stick to our game plan and dominate throughout the 80 minutes.

“It’ll be a tough muddy evening on their pitch and it will be like running on sand at times. They’ll work hard for each other and use the conditions to their advantage. We need to do our best things right and put in a good performance.
