LOWES READY FOR PHYSICAL TEST

11 Feb 2016

HEAD Coach James Lowes is anticipating a physical battle against Whitehaven on Saturday, kick off 6.30pm.

Lowes’ men beat Whitehaven 32-16 in Cumbria last season as Adrian Purtell and Danny Williams both grabbed two tries.

The Bulls were up against a strong physical Haven team, which included current Bradford prop, Johnny Walker.

However, this season Walker will be in Lowes’ team and will add to the physical battle on Saturday evening.

“When you go to Cumbria you expect a physical game, and I’m expecting one this weekend,” said Lowes, who is sponsored by In Memory of Joyce Dobby.

“It’s always interesting to play a Cumbrian side up in Cumbria. You know you’re going to get a physical game and the conditions will be difficult, but we’re prepared for the test on Saturday.

“It’ll be good to play our first away game. The boys have been itching to get the season underway and it’s good to playing games now.

“Johnny seemed to follow us around a little bit last year.

“He played against us in the opening game of the season for Leigh, then he played for Whitehaven when we went up there, and then he played for London.

“He is a certain breed of rugby player with a good character and this year he’s on our team.

“He put himself about last year when he played us because Bradford is his home side, so he wanted to impress and put himself about, which he does well because that’s how he plays the game.”

HAGGERTY EXPECTING A PHYSICAL BATTLE

11 Feb 2016

KURT Haggerty is raring to go for Saturday’s physical battle versus Whitehaven.

The Ireland international made his Bradford Bulls debut in the opening game of 2016 as the Bulls beat Featherstone Rovers 22-12.

Haggerty played against Whitehaven in 2013, when the former Widnes Vikings man had a spell at Barrow Raiders, and is ready for the physical challenge.

“I’m looking forward to the Whitehaven game. It’s going to be another tough fixture, even more so because it’s at their ground,” said Haggerty, who is sponsored by Alexis Ridler.

“I know quite a few of the Whitehaven lads and they’re quite a physical bunch.

“They’re a physical side, who will try and come through the middle of us. We’ve got to be smart and we’ve got to be ready to bulk up in front them.

“The biggest and most important thing to take into the game is the win against Featherstone. It was brilliant to get our first win under our belt and with the other results in the league it felt even better.

“We only conceded two tries, so there are aspects of our game to work on but there are a lot of positives we can take into Saturday’s clash.

“Hopefully, the pitch won’t be too bad with the wet weather expected and if we’re a bit smarter in a few areas I’m sure we’ll be fine and come out on top.

“We’ve got to keep the momentum going now. We’ve got to keep picking up the wins, which will set us up nicely for the end of the year, but we can’t underestimate any team in this league.”
