ACADEMY EDGED OUT BY HULL

A controversial penalty a minute from time in front of the posts, condemned the Bulls Academy to a 28-30 defeat to Hull FC at the Grattan Stadium.

It was a disappointing way to end a contest in which a badly under strength Bulls side had given their all.

Hull looked like they would run away with the game in the first period and after Michael Tate's try, goaled by Danny Softly had levelled the scores at 6 all it was Hull who took the initiative and raced into a 20-6 lead.  The Bulls hit back through Rob Hawthorne and Liam Kay but conceded right on the break to go in trailing 24-16.

The second half though belonged to the Bulls who forced a series of errors from Hull and Ryan Wright and Kyle Willamson both had tries to go with a solitary effort from Hull.  The Bulls did it tough in the last fifteen minutes as Liam Kay was sent to the sin bin for questioning a decision from the ever pedantic Referee, Mr Smith.

The Bulls trailed 28-26 going into the last three minutes and a penalty to Danny Softly, after a high tackle by Hull, looked to have given them a point.  However, Hull went for a short kick off and appeared to knock the ball forward only for Mr Smith to adjudge the Bulls were the culprits.  From the scrum, Hull worked the ball under the posts only to lose the ball in the tackle but the Referee decided that it was  ball steal and handed Hull the two points on a plate.  It was a disappointing way to lose the game but the Bulls must take all the credit for the way their side, with only three substitutes, pushed the much stronger Hull outfit all the way.
