Big Joe Vagana

A GREAT SEND OFF FOR SHONNY!
02/07/2008
We had a good win against Hull KR last week and I thought we scored some good tries but we know we still have a lot to work on and we need to keep our feet on the ground.

Joe Vagana Column

02/07/2008 A GREAT SEND OFF FOR SHONNY!
We had a good win against Hull KR last week and I thought we scored some good tries but we know we still have a lot to work on and we need to keep our feet on the ground.
24/06/2008 FROM ONE HULL TO THE OTHER
It was good to get the win last Sunday against Hull.
17/06/2008 HIGH SUMMER, HIGH SPIRITS
I thought we showed heaps of improvement in the St Helens game but we still didn’t come away with the two points we wanted.
10/06/2008 I'M A RECORD BREAKER!
I was disappointed with the result last week but not so much with the performance.
03/06/2008 A GAME TO FORGET
It goes without saying that we are gutted, disappointed, and ashamed – all those words – after our performance at the weekend.
28/05/2008 WE ARE UP FOR THE CUP!
It was another disappointing defeat to Leeds last week but it was a much better performance from the Bulls.
20/05/2008 A GAME NOT TO BE MISSED
It’s a big day for me today as I will get to find out if I am fit to play against the Rhinos this week.
13/05/2008 Ready To Return
It was a fantastic win last week against a very good Catalans side.
06/05/2008 CATALANS IS THE NEXT BIG TEST
It was another disappointing result for us on the weekend at the Millennium Stadium and it hurts.
29/04/2008 IT WAS A FANTASTIC WIN OVER WIGAN
We had a fantastic win over Wigan last Sunday. We played very well, especially in defence where we were very strong and we took the game to Wigan.
22/04/2008 ITWAS A RECORD BREAKING DAY LAST SATURDAY
It was a big win last week in the Carnegie Challenge Cup. It was the record for the number of points the club has scored and also for the largest winning margin
15/04/2008 IT'S CHALLENGE CUP TIME THIS WEEKEND
This weekend it is Carnegie Challenge Cup time and Wembley is the big jackpot at the end of the road. Everyone wants to get to Wembley and we saw last year just how special it was going back there and that’s where we want to be.
08/04/2008 IT WAS A GREAT VICTORY AT HULL LAST WEEK
It was a very good win over at the KC Stadium last Friday. That makes it five out of six for us now and I thought the boys showed a lot of character to tough it out
01/04/2008 I CAN'T WAIT TO RACE AGAINST DWAIN CHAMBERS
It was a great win for the boys last week and at last we put a good performance for the full eighty minutes and the most pleasing thing is the fact that when we watched the video there were still a lot of areas we can improve in.
25/03/2008 RIDE 'EM COWBOY!
It was the very busy Easter Period last weekend and we started in the worst possible way with a really good hiding at Headingley Carnegie.
18/03/2008 READY FOR THE RHINOS
It was an awesome win for the boys last week against a full strength Warrington side who were coming off the back of a five game unbeaten run.
13/03/2008 GETTING IN THE IRSH SPIRIT
I missed the trip to France to play Catalans but the boys enjoyed a good win. By all accounts it was a tough one but it was a win and we needed the two points.
05/03/2008 GIVE ME A BREAK!
It was disaster all round at the JJB last Saturday. Not only did we contrive to lose another game we should have won but I also managed to break my arm!!
26/02/2008 ONWARDS AND UPWARDS FOR THE BOYS!
We were massively disappointed again last week with our loss to St Helens.
20/02/2008 GET THAT FRIDAY FEELING!
It was a great result last week for us and good to get the first win of the season.
13/02/2008 ITS GOING TO BE UNMISSA-BULL
Well it wasn’t quite the start we wanted last week at Wakefield was it? It was even more disappointing to us when we looked back at the video and saw the chances we bombed that cost us the game.
06/02/2008 THE BOYS ARE READY TO RUMBLE!
Well the new season starts for us this weekend and it’s always an exciting time. It’s 2008 and we have some new faces in the squad with a lot of experience.
25/09/2007 THE END OF ANOTHER SEASON
Well it’s the final column of the year for me and it’s come around much quicker than I thought it would.
21/09/2007 IT'S CRUNCH TIME
It was the ultimate disappointment at Hull last week. It was one of those should have, could have but didn’t win games. It was a game we dominated everywhere but the scoreboard. It’s always disappointing to lose and especially before the Play Off’s but those twenty seven rounds are over with now and we are into a brand new knock out competition.
12/09/2007 A STAR IS BORN
It was a good win in the end against the Dragons last week despite our slow start.
05/09/2007 Bring on the Dragons
It was good to be back playing again this week. It’s much better than sitting on the sidelines watching and it was a very special occasion to came back in; a big package.
29/08/2007 GET READY FOR THE BIG ONE!
Well it’s the big one this week!! It’s the club’s Centenary and we have got Leeds at home.
22/08/2007 CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY
It was much the same story at Huddersfield last week as it had been the previous week at Hull KR. Once again we got off to a good start but let things slip in the second half and shot ourselves in the foot.
15/08/2007 JEKYLL AND HYDE AT CRAVEN PARK
It was certainly a game of two halves at Hull KR last week.
08/08/2007 SEEING RED
It was a tremendous victory over Wakefield Wildcats last week and I thought the boys showed a lot of character to claim the win in very difficult circumstances.
31/07/2007 BACK TO BUSINESS
It was massive disappointment for us last week losing in the Semi Final of the Carnegie Challenge Cup. Once again our errors proved very costly; we were so close but no cigar!
25/07/2007 The Road to Wembley
It was certainly a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ for us at Salford last week. Someone asked me what happened and I told him ‘nothing happened for us’!! I think we were still on the bus and we can offer no excuses for our abject performance. Salford wanted it more than we did on the day and we let ourselves and our supporters down but we have had seven days to put things right and hopefully we will be back on track this week.
17/07/2007 Singing In The Rain
I think the supporters need the biggest rap of all last week for the way they stayed and supported us in atrocious weather. Both sets of fans were magnificent and I can’t thank them enough for coming to the game and staying right till the end. There was over 11,000 in the stadium and as usual the Bulls supporters played their part in the victory. They deserved that win as much as we did.
11/07/2007 MORE CONSISTENCY NEEDED
It was a very disappointing night at the JJB last week. We have been travelling pretty good for the last few weeks but we let ourselves down on Friday against Wigan. We made lots of costly errors and didn’t play the way we wanted to. Five tries to two on the scoreboard doesn’t lie and we have been working very hard to put things right this week because we are up against another very good side.
04/07/2007 Great Support At Headingley
It was a very satisfying victory last week over the Rhinos and it doesn’t come much better than a win at Headingley in front of a full house.
27/06/2007 ANOTHER YEAR AT THE BULLS
Well we had a few days off last week and the plan was to relax but, like all husbands know, if you get a spare five minutes the wife finds jobs for you to do!! I had lots of DIY thrown at me but fortunately the rain helped me out and I could not do the outside jobs!! I compromised by going to shopping malls and sat and had a nice cup of coffee whilst the wife shopped!! Of course I then had to pick up the tab!! But that’s married life!
21/06/2007 EMOTIONAL DAY AT THE GRATTAN
We got the victory we wanted over Hull last week but we were certainly down on our energy levels and were a bit flat. I also think the emotion behind Les’s last game got the better of us.
14/06/2007 FAREWELL TO THE "FREAK"
We had seventy three minutes of fantastic rugby against Huddersfield last weekend but we went to sleep for seven minutes and let them score three very soft tries. Overall we were very happy with what we did and the good thing is that even in a performance like that there were a lot of things to work on when we watched the video on Monday morning.
06/06/2007 BRING ON THE GIANTS
It was like playing in a hurricane in France last weekend! The wind was certainly blowing hard and we had it behind us in the first half but in our faces for the second. It was a great victory too against a side who are much better than they were last year. They have some good players and with Stacey pulling the strings they are a formidable outfit.
30/05/2007 BIG JOE - TRY MACHINE
It’s a bit of a rush for me this week to fit everything in as we set off to France for the game against Catalans Dragons at 4.00am!! That’s right!! As everyone knows there are not too many morning people at the Bulls and it means getting up at 3.00 am.
23/05/2007 NO EXCUSES
It was a disappointing evening for us last week at Huddersfield. We have been given a lot of excuses from people, because we played a lot of young guys but we don’t need any excuses ourselves. We said we were going there to win and unfortunately, Huddersfield were just a bit too good for us on the night.
16/05/2007 WINING UGLY
I missed the game against Wakefield but we toughed it out and came away with a win and it was a costly one too with a couple of bad injuries. The conditions were terrible and not conducive to open rugby and when you add to that the fact that it was a Challenge Cup game, then you can understand why it was a tough, dour sort of game.
09/05/2007 WHAT A WEEKEND!!
It was a bizarre ending to the Millennium Stadium and a real shame. It was a great game for supporters to watch and a great advert for the sport in a different location and to be spoilt by the decisions of the match officials.
02/05/2007 THE DOUBLE OVER WOLVES
Well we certainly managed to lay the bogey against Warrington last weekend. They have had a bit of an Indian sign over us lately but we have now managed to do the double over them and have beaten them in the last four meetings.
25/04/2007 GREAT WIN AT THE KC
It was a great win for us at Hull last Friday. To go there and win is never easy and to do it with so many injured players shows the character of the team. Some young guys stepped up and the club’s try scoring machines came through!!
18/04/2007 ROCKET AT HALF TIME
We certainly put the hammer down against Hull KR in the second half last week. After the poor display in the first period we got a rocket up our backsides from the Coach at the break and it was well deserved.
11/04/2007 A MIXED EASTER
It was a tough Easter period and we came away with a loss and a win. I thought we were unlucky last Thursday against Leeds and to lose in the last minute was very disappointing.
05/04/2007 WINNING UGLY
I thought it was an ugly win against Castleford but I’d take an ugly win over a good loss anytime!! They gave it their all and they never gave up but we dug in and came away with the victory that puts us into the next round.
29/03/2007 BRING ON THE TIGERS
We really underperformed against the Dragons last week. I don’t really know why but I think it’s safe to say that we were outplayed in every department. Steve Mc had been telling us all week that if we didn’t start playing from the off against this side, then would get burned and get burned we did!!
21/03/2007 A DOUBLE CENTURY
The trip to London was a successful one for us. It’s always difficult to go down there and get the two points and as expected it was a tough encounter.
14/03/2007 SMILES ALL ROUND
It was good to get back to winning ways last week. We made a lot better start to the game than the previous week and it paid off for us. But we still have plenty of room for improvement after watching the video on Monday morning, even after a good performance like that, so that’s good for us for the season.
07/03/2007 LESSONS WILL BE LEARNT
Well we certainly got caught cold last week at St Helens. I think for the first twenty minutes we were still on the bus!!! It just shows that you have to be on your game right from the start against sides like St Helens but, to the credit of the whole team, we fought back and didn’t let our heads drop.
28/02/2007 ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
Well it’s three wins from three and we are top of the table but it’s early days in the season and we certainly aren’t getting carried away with anything. As a team we are still learning each other’s style of play and we know we have a lot of work to be done and a lot of things to be worked on.
21/02/2007 BRING ON THE WARRIORS
We did it tough last week at Warrington but we came away with the two points and that’s what we went for. We were a bit up and down in the first half but played very well in the second and it was a good win in the end. The new boys certainly went well for us.
15/02/2007 A GOOD START
Well we managed to get the season off to a good start with a win but it was a very tough game. I think it showed in all the game just how equal it’s going to be and I don’t think there will be a run away winner this time. It’s not good for our bodies and not good for the heartstrings but it’s great for the game!!
06/02/2007 GOODTO BE BACK
Well what can I say except; It’s good to be back!! It’s the start of the season this weekend and we can’t wait. We have had a really good pre season and the boys are a lot fitter than previously.
10/10/2006 DISAPPOINTMENT AT THE KC
It was a disappointing way to end the season and we didn’t make to our sixth Grand Final in a row but I have to say everyone gave 120% last Friday night at the KC Stadium. There was a great atmosphere at the ground with a big crowd and those are the games that all players want to play in.
04/10/2006 IT'S CRUNCH TIME
I thought we had an impressive victory last week against Warrington. We got off to the worst possible start, losing Lynchy in our first set of six but then we went on the rampage and scored eighteen points very quickly.
27/09/2006 GRATTAN STADIUM FINALE
It thought we put in a very good performance last week against Salford. We got off to a great start and never really looked in any danger.
20/09/2006 A DIFFERENT BALL GAME
It was good to get back to winning ways at the weekend. We had a slight hiccup for about fifteen minutes but I thought we hit back strongly and it was much improved on our last few performances.
14/09/2006 FREE MEALS FOR CLOGGER & DEACS
Once again it was a bad day at the office for us last Friday. It’s even more disappointing when you look at the stats and see that once again we totally dominated a side except on the scoreboard.
06/09/2006 AWAY FORM MUST IMPROVE
I was very disappointed with how we played last week at Wigan. Once again we let ourselves, and our supporters who traveled a long way, down and it was very frustrating.
30/08/2006 BACK TO BUSINESS
It will be strange this week travelling to Wigan and coming up against Stuart Fielden, Nobby and Phil Veivers!! We are certainly back with a bang aren’t we!!
22/08/2006 A BULL FOR LIFE
We had a great victory over Castleford and it capped a good week for me. Cas are a difficult side to beat, as they showed when they took a point off of us at the Jungle in June and to win so convincingly was good for us, particularly after the result in London the previous weekend.
16/08/2006 CAS UP NEXT
We had a very disappointing trip to the Capital last week. We went into the game full of confidence after a great win over Warrington and we had trained very well in the week leading up to the game.
09/08/2006 WARRINGTON HOODOO PUT TO BED
It was a good way to put the Warrington hoodoo to bed last week!! They have been telling everyone that they know how to beat us but we got it right last week and blew them away in the first half.
02/08/2006 NOW IT GETS SERIOUS
We had a great week off last week the trouble is it was just not long enough!! Some of us stayed at home and just lay on the couch, some went camping and some took the time to go abroad with their families
26/07/2006 CARRY ON CAMPING
We had another good win last Friday at Wakefield and I thought we went well in parts. It’s always difficult against a side that is struggling and Wakefield are rapidly running out of games.
19/07/2006 SPORTS DAY WINNER
It was back to winning ways last week but wasn’t it a scrappy game? I think the Dragons have got better every week and they gave us a tough game.
12/07/2006 HEARTBREAK AT HEADINGLEY
It was heartbreaking to lose at Headingley Carnegie last Friday after we had dominated the game for most of it. We played very well and, for the second week in a row, we beat them in every department except on the scoreboard.
05/07/2006 RICHARD GERE READY FOR RHINOS
We lost out by a point last week at Salford but we beat them in every stat that’s in Rugby League except on the scoreboard. I thought we played very well but some big calls didn’t go our way and we missed some opportunities and it was not to be on the day. It is always disheartening to lose when you know you have dominated the game but we’ll be back!!
28/06/2006 STANLEY'S DUCK
We had a bit of a shock last week on Thursday when we were told that Stu Fielden had moved to Wigan. He has given great service to the club over the past nine years and he has give 110% every time he has been on the field so you can’t knock the guy for wanting to secure his future.
22/06/2006 BACK ON TRACK!!
It was a great win against Saints last week. It was a very good team performance and it was just reward for the way we had worked on our defence over the past few weeks.
14/06/2006 WITHERS TAKES UP BOWLING!!
We were very disappointed with the draw at Castleford last week. We turned over far too much ball and it meant we had to do a lot of tackling in the heat and it took its toll.
07/06/2006 FUN ON THE GOLF COURSE
Last Friday we went to Bridlington and had our day by the sea!! It was a great day and we trained for about an hour and a half on the beach and then enjoyed each other’s company in the afternoon.
31/05/2006 ON THE BEACH!
I don’t know what went wrong last week against the Rhinos. In the first half I thought we played very well and there were a couple of chances we didn’t take but we the second half was a different ball game.
31/05/2006 ON THE BEACH!
I don’t know what went wrong last week against the Rhinos. In the first half I thought we played very well and there were a couple of chances we didn’t take but we the second half was a different ball game.
24/05/2006 WELL WHAT A SHOCKER!!
It was a disappointing performance from us last Saturday at St Helens and first of all I would like to apologise to our fans who travelled the hour journey and paid good money to support us.
17/05/2006 GOOD TRIP FOR ALL
We had a good weekend in London last week and that was capped with a great win over Harlequins.
10/05/2006 OFF TO THE CAPITAL
I didn’t really want to mention it but last week I predicted a great weekend for both the Kiwis and the Bulls!!
03/05/2006 LES BETTER AT SCORING THAN CAMPING!!
Well we had a good win on the scoreboard last week against the Catalans but there is still a lot of improvement in us.
26/04/2006 THE DRAGONS ARE COMING
We didn’t get Steve McNamara off to the best of starts did we?
20/04/2006 MAXIMUM EASTER POINTS
It was a great Easter period for us with two victories and four points over the holidays. It’s not good on the body but when you get wins like that it certainly helps dull the pain.
12/04/2006 BUSY EASTER
I thought we let ourselves down last week against Warrington. We were very flat and never really got going.
05/04/2006 WOLVES UP NEXT
We went from the fog to the mud in just a week at Odsal!! The conditions for the Wigan game were appalling with the fog and last week the pitch was so heavy following all the rain that it was like a mud bath.
28/03/2006 CUP FEVER AT ODSAL
What a strange night it was at Odsal last Friday. I think it was the first time for a lot of the boys to play in fog like that.
22/03/2006 BACK TO BUSINESS
It was a very disappointing performance from us last Friday at St Helens and we have no excuses.
15/03/2006 THANKS TO THE FANS
After my appearance on SKY TV last week I have been waiting for the National Press to ring me about doing a column for one of the top magazines but as yet I haven’t had the call and I guess I’ll have to make do with this one, haha!!
08/03/2006 FUN IN THE SUN
It was good to get away to Perpignan and see a bit of blue sky. It never fails to lift your spirits and your mood when you get away from the rain of northern England.
01/03/2006 BACK ON TRACK
It was good to get back to wining ways again last week against Salford City Reds after our poor showing the previous week.
22/02/2006 TIME TO GET BACK ON TRACK
Well we didn’t exactly come out of the Harlequins game smelling of roses did we!!
15/02/2006 SUPER LEAGUE- BACK WITH A BANG
As expected we had a tough game last week against Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue, or the Atlantic Solutions Stadium to give it its correct title.
08/02/2006 WORLD CHAMPIONS
It was a special night last week against Wests. We beat a quality side and everything we did out on the training paddock just seemed to click. I felt we dominated the game from the start.
01/02/2006 BULLS ARE BACK!
Well we are back with a bang this week. It only seems like yesterday that we were doing our last article saying what a great end to the season it had been and now we are back with a game against the NRL Champions, Wests Tigers at the Galpharm on Friday.
19/10/2005 A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER
Well we did it and what a fantastic way to end the season. Words can’t describe how we feel and we did it for us and the hard core supporters; they know who they are, who believed in us throughout what has been a difficult season.
12/10/2005 THE BIG ONE
Well we have made it through to the big game this weekend and I thought we showed some great character to get that win at St Helens.
06/10/2005 TWO TO GO
What a turn up for the books it was last Friday night!! We were confident of winning but we didn’t expect to run up a record score against a side like Hull.
29/09/2005 THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL!
We are well into the Play Off’s now and it was a very tough game against London last week. It wasn’t a very fast game, in fact I think it was one of the slowest Play Off games I can remember but it was very tough.
21/09/2005 PLAY OFF TIME!
I thought we showed great character last weekend when we came back and defeated St Helens at Knowsley Road.
14/09/2005 2 TROPHIES IN THE BAG-1 BIG TROPHY TO GO!
Well we managed to get the win over the Giants; eventually!! It was a scrappy win and it was under par with what we had dished up against both Leeds and Hull in our last two games and the ones leading up to that.
08/09/2005 FINALLY!
Well I finally got over the line for that elusive try and it was just as I predicted. I told everyone I was going to get over the line and I managed it!!
31/08/2005 BIG TEST AHEAD
It will be good to get back to a game again this week after the week off for the Powergen Challenge Cup and it couldn’t be a more difficult task.
24/08/2005 STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
We had a great win on Friday night at Headingley and I have no doubt it was our best display of the season.
16/08/2005 THE BIG ONE
It was good to be back last week and the side recorded a good win over Salford.
10/08/2005 IN SEARCH OF THE ELUSIVE TRY
It was very frustrating to have to sit out last week’s game against Widnes. No player makes a good spectator and I’m no exception.
03/08/2005 FULL STEAM AHEAD TO THE PLAY-OFFS
It’s back to Super League action this week after a week off.
27/07/2005 TWO IN TWO
I thought we gave a good solid performance against Salford at the Willows last week.
20/07/2005 BACK TO WINNING WAYS
It was good to get back to winning ways against Leigh last week. We have been struggling to get a win in recent weeks and, even though it as against the bottom side, we scored some good tries and hopefully that will get our confidence up for the next few weeks.
13/07/2005 CENTURION INVASION
Well it’s the same old story this week as once again we let everyone down with our display at Wakefield.
06/07/2005 WILDCATS AHEAD
I was disappointed after Friday night’s game at Headingley. Although we played well in parts we still let in some soft tries and paid the price.
29/06/2005 FULLY CHARGED
There was no game this weekend so I would imagine you would all be thinking we had an easy time.
22/06/2005 TOPSY TURVY PERFORMANCE
Once again the Jekyll and Hyde team turned up at Odsal on Sunday. You know the one that plays for twenty minutes and then goes to sleep and lets soft tries in.
15/06/2005 VIKING REVENGE
Well this week has certainly been a lot better than last week, a good win at Huddersfield helped us ease the pain a little from the St Helens match and we hope we can put that result to bed.
08/06/2005 GIANT BATTLE AHEAD
It was a record home defeat for us last weekend against St Helens and there is not too much that I can say.
01/06/2005 A BULL-ISH PERFORMANCE
I thought we gave one of our better performances of the season at Hull last week.
25/05/2005 HULL REVENGE
Well we blew it again didn’t we? It’s not easy sitting here every week doing this column and seemingly coming up with the same old excuses.
18/05/2005 TIE OF THE ROUND
It was a much better performance last week against Salford; in fact I thought it was our best performance of the season.
11/05/2005 CRUNCH MATCH
I know you must all be fed up of me saying it now but we are very disappointed at the outcome of the Hull game and our exit from the Powergen Challenge Cup.
04/05/2005 CHALLENGE CUP CLASH
It was certainly a slow start at London on Sunday and I think we ‘watched’ the first half from the team bus!!
27/04/2005 WEEKEND IN THE CAPITAL
It was a good result for us again last Friday.
20/04/2005 BACK TO WINNING WAYS
We got back to winning ways last week and I thought we played well. In terms of how we played I thought it was our best display of the season.
13/04/2005 A GIANT GAME
It all went wrong again in the first half at Warrington. We are like a Jekyll and Hyde team at the moment.
06/04/2005 WOLVES REUNION
I thought the game at Featherstone emphasised the gap that has developed between the Super League and the players in the National Leagues.
30/03/2005 ROAD TO CARDIFF BEGINS
It’s been a very tough weekend for us with no reward for two games played over the holiday period.
23/03/2005 THE BEST YET
It was a tough game against Hull, probably the toughest we have had and it was the best we have played so far this season.
16/03/2005 SOME VERY GOOD TRIES
It was a good win in the end at Leigh after a disappointing first half.
08/03/2005 MUCH IMPROVED
I thought we were back to something like our best last weekend against London.
02/03/2005 BACK TO WINNING WAYS
Well we finally got that elusive win and in dramatic circumstances.
23/02/2005 CRUNCH TIME AT JJB
It’s certainly strange looking at the table and seeing our name in the bottom two rather than the top two but that is how it stands after two rounds of Super League X.
15/02/2005 WE WILL GET BETTER
What a way to start our season!! We just weren’t at the races and it’s hard to figure out why.
09/02/2005 BULLS ARE BACK IN TOWN
After my short column last week, It’s good to be back properly and I can’t wait for the big kick off against Wakefield on Sunday.
02/02/2005 SUPER LEAGUE X IS COMING
Well it’s good to be back!! The season starts in a fortnight and I am just doing a short column for this week to get you all into the swing of things before we get the ‘show on the road’ next week.
19/10/2004 FINAL COLUMN OF THE SEASON
