YOUNG BULLS IN WAKEFIELD DEFEAT DESPITE BATTLING SECOND-HALF

BRADFORD Bulls Academy fell to a 26-14 defeat to Wakefield Trinity at the Mobile Rocket Stadium on Saturday - despite an impressive three-try second-half performance.

A tightly-contested opening quarter saw neither defence breached in blustery conditions before parity was broken on 27 minutes.

Soon after a Bradford score was disallowed, Yusuf Aydin went over before another try from Leigh Beattie’s side was chalked off – prior to two further Wakefield tries.

Out of the starting blocks, our Academy side immediately reduced the arrears to just a one-score lead courtesy of tries from Kieran Brining and Murphy Smith.

Two quick-fire tries re-established the Wakefield advantage before a late Ryan Leadbeater effort – on return from injury.

Beattie’s side went into the game on the back of a narrow defeat at the hands of Castleford Tigers and they were the first to break the whitewash – only to be denied by the referee’s whistle.

Aydin barged his way over for the game’s first legitimate score before Bradford saw another try disallowed – this time for an offside infringement.

Wakefield took full advantage as Jordan Jones scored before a lofted pass to Lewis Murphy set him over in the corner.

Immediately after the restart, Bradford piled the pressure on their West Yorkshire rivals and soon found themselves on the scoring ledger.

A long pass out wide from Matthew Race saw Brining one-on-one with his wing opponent and he showed too much power to crash his way over.

With the wind in Bradford sails, the visitors came back at Wakefield and soon found themselves back within one try of their opponents.

A cut-out pass, out of dummy half from Cameron Berry found Murphy Smith for a stroll in on the right edge, just reward for Bradford’s dominance at the start of the second half.

But the home side would halt the visitors’ surge with two quickfire tries to take the game away from Bradford.

They continued to press however in the closing stages and a pass from Harry Shackleton put Leadbeater crashing over through two Wakefield defenders – marking his return from injury in style.
