MINCHELLA PRAISES NEW TEAMMATES FOR RESOUNDING VICTORY

Making his debut in the Red Amber and Black strip, Elliot Minchella capped an outstanding performance with two tries in the Boxing Day victory over rivals, Halifax RLFC.

Minchella, sponsored by Gareth, Ruth Rider and Darren Smith, featured in the halves with Lee Smith for the majority for the game, until rising talent Rowan Milnes came on for the final twenty minutes.

The debutant linked up with Smith just before the half time hooter to give Bradford the winning edge, latching onto a perfectly weighted grubber kick after giving the call to his halfback-counterpart.

“I was saying to Smithy keep on putting the balls through in training and it paid off. I don’t mind chasing kicks, if it comes off it’s even better, I’ll take ownership for those.  I like to call for them,” said Minchella.

“Smithy is a great player, his record speaks for itself, he has been there and done that. I am trying to learn off him, we are bouncing off each other, I am good at some things he is better at others. I’m really enjoying playing in the halves with him and if we do play together again then I’ll be looking forward to it.”

Leading the team around the field for the full 80-minutes, Minchella was the catalyst for success in Bradford’s first outing ahead of the new season.

Despite claiming two tries in his first appearance for the Bulls, Minchella remains humble, as the focal point of success was the all-round impressive team performance.

“It was nice to score two tries but I think that we showed a lot of great attitude, especially in defence. In the second half it did get tough out there, the conditions weren’t very good, but I’m really pleased with everyone’s attitude and every player worked their socks off.

“The main thing was the attitude in defence which was there to see. Everyone worked their socks off in defence which is good. We have a real togetherness already.”

Before joining Bulls in September from Sheffield Eagles, the former West Bowling junior originally learnt his craft in the forward, until expanding his playing abilities to the halves, making him a valuable asset for John Kear.

“I just like getting my hands on the ball. If that is as a half back and being a runner, or playing loose forward and getting in the middle. As long as I have my hands on the ball I’m happy.

Minchella will go head to head with his old friends on the 14th January at the Provident Stadium as the Bulls host Sheffield Eagles in the second trial game under the watchful eye of John Kear.

“It’s just another game, it would be nice to play against them so quick after moving on and see how they are. But you can’t go into a game and think it is more than a game, it is just a game of rugby league so I’m really looking forward to it.”
